A Tiny Trunk, A Huge Win for Elephants

A Tiny Trunk, A Huge Win for Elephants

Joy echoed across two zoos — and thousands of homes — as the Cincinnati Zoo announced that their beloved bull elephant Sabu is a father again! While on a temporary stay at the Columbus Zoo, Sabu helped welcome a healthy baby girl to Sunny, a first-time mom whose gentle instincts and calm courage have amazed keepers at every step.

Weighing in at 215 pounds, the calf arrived safely after nearly two years of planning, care, and hope. From round-the-clock monitoring to soft-spoken reassurance, teams of keepers and veterinarians worked tirelessly to give mom and baby the safest, most loving start possible.

But this birth is bigger than one family — it’s a win for conservation. Asian elephants are endangered, threatened by habitat loss and poaching. Every calf born under the Species Survival Plan strengthens the future of the species and shows what’s possible when compassion meets purpose.

With Sabu’s steady presence and Sunny’s new-mom glow, communities are celebrating connection, continuity, and the promise of tomorrow. As one zoo official said, “This little one carries our hope in every step.”
